Angel Wadsworth The society of The Running Man by stephen king is one of division and dystopia. In the beginning of the novel Ben describes the other side of the river. Where Ben lives is filled with poverty, sickness, dirtiness, and an overall state of decay. They barely have enough money for food so he takes pills in order to get nourishment. His wife prostitutes herself in order to pay for their daughter medicine. Showing the complete lack of wealth within his environment. The rich side of society enjoys lavish apartments, food, medicine and good jobs. The division of these two worlds leads to a hatred between them both. Which can be best shown when Killien tells Ben “you symbolize all their fears in this dark and broken time”( , This truly shows the division between the two. Another huge part of the society in The Running man is technology/media, FreeVees are required in all homes of everyone, and media is used to exploit the poor to entertain the rich.
