Krista Gardner Soc 219 March 22, 2007 Pregnancy, Childbirth, and New Parenthood “Becoming a parent takes great responsibility and a lot of effort. You have to put in all your time and have a lot of patience. It’s not easy, but it is a once in a lifetime experience.” Those are the words from my mother, the woman who I interviewed to learn more about parenting, childbirth and becoming a new parent. There are many myths about parenting, childbirth, and being a parent. I am going to help explain these myths by comparing them with the interview I had with my mother. The first thing that happens in becoming a new parent is pregnancy. My mother said that when she found out she was pregnant, she was sick and had stomach aches. But, it wasn’t quite a surprise, as one myth states. She was planning on having a baby and new that she would be pregnant sometime soon. The myth that pregnancy is a surprise could be true if the mother wasn’t planning on becoming pregnant. The second myth is that pregnancy is mysterious. I don’t think this is true because my mother said that when she was pregnant, the doctor told her everything that was happening and what was going to happen. “Nothing was unclear as to what would happen in the next nine months,” my mother said. “Everything was explained to me.” Another myth is that a doctor must “confirm” a pregnancy. This isn’t true. My mother had said that shed used 3 pregnancy test to determine she was

pregnant before she went to the doctor. She also stated that most women go to the doctor to help them through the pregnancy, not to determine it. A doctor can confirm a pregnancy, but it’s not necessary.
