REL 321Paper 2 & SummaryAmerican Religion and Current Culture WarsThe United States of America is often referred to as the ‘melting pot’. This nickname wascoined due to its mixture of different cultures, ethnicities, and religions. It only makes sense that a country founded by people searching for freedom from religious persecution would become home to a variety of people who practice a variety of different religions. Although with religious freedom doesn’t always come religious tolerance. As stated in the text, “Tolerance refers to the willingness to grant basic civil liberties to members of a faith other than one’s own, regardless of how one feels about that other faith” (Corbett-Hemeyer, p.4). Currently, this is not always true in the United States. People are often mistreated or looked down on from others based off of their religious affiliations. In this paper I will be discussing the United States’ current culture war and how American religion and the government are involved.The United States was founded on religion. Fleeing from Europe’s religious persecution, the Pilgrims settled in what is now America. Over the years, America has been seen as a safe haven for many all-around undergoing persecutions for either their religion, race, nationality, or other reasons.
