Cognitive Development in Early Childhood Explain the method or methods professionals could use to determine whether a young child has reached appropriate cognitive milestones linked to cognitive theories in early childhood. For example, how could a young child demonstrate object permanence, conservation, or scaffolding? There are many changes that children go through during early childhood, not just physically, but also cognitively. Children may go through the stages at different paces, but there are cognitive milestones which the children must meet during each developmental period. Professionals are able to tell much about a child’s development through their achievement of cognitive milestones. There are two well-known psychologist who have contributed a great deal on the topic of cognitive development and who have presented professionals with methods to determine if children have met cognitive milestones: Jean Piaget and Lev S. Vygotsky.
