Jozefick 1 John Jozefick Professor Shaughnessy English 152 20 October 2016 A Literary Analysis: A&P A & P is a short story by John Updike that deals with a young man, Sammy, who is an employee at a local grocery store in a small town located in New England. The plot of the story hinges on the nineteen year old Sammy and his experiences while at the local grocery store. He spends his time at the store as a checkout line clerk and over a period of time has built a resentment for the management and customers at the store. Also, he is intrigued as a teenager about the opposite sex. The story plot centers on one day at work when three attractive ladies enter the store clothed in bathing suits only. Sammy notices the girls who are unusual customers in the grocery store. He names the most attractive girl as ‘Queenie’ who appears as the authoritative leader of the three. He also names the others as ‘Plaid’ and the ‘Big Tall Goony Goony’ who are no match for the attractiveness and beauty of ‘Queenie’ (John Updike’S A & P: Analysis & Theme 1). The story takes a turn when the girls finished shopping and were ready to leave the store. They approach the register operated by Sammy where they are confronted about their attire by Sammy’s black and white stylish manager known as Lengel. The manager criticizes the ladies for shopping in the store in their beach clothes and states the store policy that required customers to shop while their shoulders are covered. The ladies are embarrassed by the apprehension by the store manager who was the former Sunday school teacher in the local town

The short story is narrated on the first person narrator point of view. The narrator in A & P is Sammy who seems to be telling the story and truths as he deems or sees fit. However, he follows the trend of many first person narrators whereby his points of view appear limited in both time and scope thereby making him unreliable. Sammy in the short story sees most adults as
