Worksheet O: Rigid Body Motion III: Angular Momentum. Statics. 1. A stick (4.0 m long, 2.0 kg) hangs from a wall as shown below. One end of the stick rests against the wall and forms a 75º angle with the wall. A cable is attached to the stick at its middle point and forms a 75º angle with the stick. Find: a.. The tension on the cable. The free body diagram for the stick is shown above. The force on the stick by the wall, labeled F, is the addition of normal force by the wall on the stick (that corresponds to the horizontal component F x ) and the static friction force that prevents the stick from sliding up or down the wall (that corresponds to the vertical component F y ). Since it is not easy to know a priori what will be the direction of this force, we ignore whether F y is positive or negative (in the figure it is drawn as positive, but that is just a guess). Net torque about the contact point between the stick and the wall: sin 75 sin 75 0 (with 2.0 m) 20 N mgL TL L Tm g °− °= = == b. The magnitude and direction of the total force by the wall acting on the stick.
