Communication Theory In the beginning…. Communication defined Miller provides lots of definitions Some are very information transfer oriented Some focus on the symbolic nature of comm “social interaction through symbols and message systems” Memorize them all!!! Or not. Communication is Process - continuous -has previous and future communication as context and is a verb Transactional - not linear (hypodermic), has feedback, process of mutual influence, has context that also influences communication Symbolic - communication is indirect and connects through arbitrary symbols …… Symbolic in detail Sign - contains signifier and signified Symbol- vehicle for the conception of objects (Langer) See a triangle with symbol, referent (object, idea) and reference (what you mean when you use the symbol) Remember that the relationship is arbitrary! We can make up our own. So, how do we go on?
