Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disorder; the body is attacking its own tissues. Currently, the cause of systemic lupus erythematosus is unknown. Medical professionals seem to think that hormones, genetics, environmental factors, or even certain medications can cause systemic lupus erythematosus. Fatigue, skin rashes, inflammation of joints are a few signs and symptoms of SLE. Physical examinations, chest x-rays, as well as lab tests can help confirm a diagnosis. Doing my research, I found that this autoimmune disorder seems to affect more women than men. This had me understanding why hormones may be a related factor. The immune response of an individual with systemic lupus erythematosus is that their B and T cells become overactive. This will create an overproduction of autoantibodies and starts to destroy the body's own cells, ultimately leading to long-term scarring. Since lupus affects many different parts of the body treatment can vary. You have to take into account the organs involved and depend on your testing to go forward in treatments. Immunosuppressants are prescribed to the individual to help with their quality of life; there is no cure for systemic lupus erythematosus. In 2011, the FDA approved it's first new drug to treat SLE in more than 50 years.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
