Upadhyay 1 English 101- Essay 2 September 26 2018 Rhetorical Analysis “Why We Crave Horror Movies” For many people, movies like horror could become an obsession and an addictive daily routine. In the world of horror movies, Stephen King always has the best collections. He is undoubtedly one of the most renowned American authors of suspense, fantasy, Sci-Fi, supernatural fiction, and directors of horror movies. In 1982, Playboy Magazine featured article by Stephen King, “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” by another name “The Horror Movies as Junk Food”. (Kearney 2017). This article was an excerpt from the king’s book Danse Macabre. In this article, he clarifies some of the reasons he senses, why people chose to watch and drawn to horror movies. King artfully conveyed his view in a casual manner with the help of a hilarious tone. However, his use of metaphorical comparisons and illustrations give him the support required to present his view in an effective way. King endorsed that human beings will criticize and complain, but they still desire horror movies. It is difficult to totally approve of his point of view that he made, specifically that all of us need to nourish our craving for craziness. By using a hilarious tone, King presented an accurate picture through which his readers could agree upon themselves to open up their minds to his view. King’s hilarious tone is shown by his opening statement: “I think that we’re all mentally ill; those of us outside the asylums only hide it better—and maybe not all that much better, after all”. (King Monsters 16). In this statement, King uses the extended dash to make a modification from a very thoughtful manner to the hilarious one without damaging an intensity of an opening statement.
