Chapter 7- Management leaders and employee empowerment (what is management?) Intro : Oprah displays the characteristics of today’s progressive managers. She is more a leader than a manager. Like Oprah many managers tent to give their workers more responsibility and authority and act more like leaders (visionaries) than hands-on managers who tell people what to do and how to do it. Managers Roles are evolving: Management is more progressive Workers tend to move in between jobs quite frequently Functions of Management (POLC): Management- is he process used to accomplish organizational goals through planning, organizing, leading, and controlling people and other organizational resources. 1. Planning- a management function that includes anticipation trends and determining the best strategies and tactics to achieve organizational goals and objectives. 2. Organizing- A management function that includes designing the structure of the organization and creating conditions and systems in which everyone and everything work together to achieve the organizational goal and objectives. 3. Leading- Creating a vision for the organization and guiding, training, coaching, and motivating, others to work effectively to achieve the organization’s goals and objectives.
