ENGR 111 Technical Memorandum (TM) format for sections 819, 820, 821 (Dr. Thomasson) TO: Professor Alex Thomasson FROM: Sam Smith, Team 6, ENGR 111, Section 819 RE: Alternate Design for Truss DATE: September 10, 2007 SUMMARY The task that I set out to accomplish was to build a new cost efficient, but safe and sturdy model bridge out of magnet pieces that is more efficient than our team’s original design. The bridge must have a minimum length of 4.3 inches and it can be no longer than 5.3 inches. I built my bridge around two basic theories. First, the fewer joints and members your bridge uses, the cheaper it is. Second, triangles are a key source of stability, so I used lots of triangles in the construction of my bridge. I staggered the sides of my bridge so that weight can be distributed more evenly throughout the bottom joints. I left the center section hollow so that pedestrians have room to walk. This new bridge would cost a total of 37.18 units, much more cost efficient than the original design, which was 53.46 units.
