Are They Compromised?The Big Sleep“In detective fiction we observe the police officer or private investigator going about his or her daily work with all its attendant ethical issues and problems” (Allegretti 581). Raymond Chandler’s character, Philip Marlowe, is a private investigator who puts a high value on client loyalty. Solely based off Marlowe’s success in remaining loyal to his client, General Sternwood, readers may believe that the private investigator is a poster child for professional ethics. Allegretti claims that, “A number of commentators have found lessons for business and professional ethics in the stories featuring Marlowe, particularly the first Marlowe novel, The Big Sleep”(581). However, as a detective more than client loyalty contributes to fulfilling professional ethics. The hard-boiled detective novel is one of the few fictional genres where the depiction of work is a major concern, sometimes pushing the original crime to the periphery. The central focus becomes the detective at his job, reflecting, phoning, making notes, following leads and suspects, interviewing witnesses – and engaging in violent acts.
