Roman Baca CHEM 121L 18 September 2018 Section 1 Partner: Chad Sherwood The Synthesis of Magnesium Oxide The synthesis of Magnesium Oxide was used in discovering the amount oxygen used in reaction (0.25235g O), the empirical formula which was MgO, and the percent composition of Mg and O (66.46% Mg, 33.54% O). Introduction In this experiment, we determined the elemental composition of the compound Magnesium Oxide. We do this by roasting metallic Magnesium in Air to determine its Oxygen uptake and therefore the percentages Magnesium and Oxygen in the compound. This information, used in conjunction with the Atomic Theory of matter, allowed us to then determine the Empirical Formula of this compound. In addition to this a comparison will then be made with the accepted chemical formulas of this and the Oxides of the other Alkaline Earth metals. Experimental Data The preparation of the uncontrolled and controlled combustion of Magnesium: Set-up a Bunsen burner. Ignited the Magnesium in the burner's flame. Set up a clay triangle on a ring stand. Transfer the crucible and cover to the triangle. Began the intense heating procedure, allow the crucible to cool and re-weigh the crucible and cover. Added 1 teaspoon of magnesium turnings to the crucible. Weigh the crucible again. Set up the crucible on the clay triangle and begin heating the crucible. Cooled crucible and added 10 drops of water. Heated until water evaporated Cooled and took final mass of reaction. Uncontrolled combustion of Mg Once lit it became very bright light, and once reaction happened Magnesium appeared to be in a white powdery state.
