Hawkins 1Grace HawkinsDr. PaterlineMy Social StructureOctober 7, 2018My Social Structure Community can be dichotomized among two different theories: The theories of either Emile Durkheim, with the proposition of Mechanical Solidarity or Organic Solidarity, and the theories of Ferdinand Tonnies, with the proposition of Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft. Mechanical Solidarity can be defined as small, simple, cohesive and similar among individuals. There are not many varying types of jobs, which causes less competition within the community. Because of shared similarities, society also experiences shared consciousness. This shared consciousness provides a close-knit and cohesive community. Organic Solidarity is defined as a large, diverse society with an extensive division of labor, and interdependence holds society together. The more society is specialized, the more dependent society becomes on each other. Gemeinschaft can be defined as an intimate and close-knit community, where everyone knows each other, and there is a sense of cohesion, and exists in small and rural communities. Gesellschaft can be defined as a large society whose sense of cohesion breaks down and becomesdependent on formality, self-interest, and individual gain, and exist in large and urban areas. My community, Villa Rica (Georgia) would be considered a Mechanical Solidarity and Gemeinschaftcommunity.
