Reading Guide Carlson1.The term Mayberry “implies [when America had] well-paying jobs, safe communities,and cheap goods that support a breadwinner’s masculinity” (Carlson 387).Thisbreadwinner masculinity is used to describe how men define their worth by their abilityto be the sole financial provider. Carlson also uses the term precarity to refer to acondition of social insecurity and instability, as opposed to “precariousness,” whichdescribes the ontological vulnerability of human life” (388).
