Ben Hirsh IDS 121.16 Passport Number 2 When asked to analyze characters throughout this novel it caught me off guard. That seems like a typical question when reading a book, but after some thought I realized that this wouldn’t just be any examination of characters; the men in this story are based off actual people. Not only am I analyzing characters in this novel, but also certain types of people who gave their life for their country during World War I. The first character I chose to look at was the main character Paul Bäumer. In the beginning Paul seems to be very relaxed and calm in everything he ventures into. Joining the war was definitely a turning point in his life. He had no idea what he was getting himself into. Paul was a very independent person before the war and was also extremely poetically inclined. I think those traits helped Paul out throughout his time on the battlegrounds. It seemed as the war dragged on Paul was able to detach himself from his emotions and attachments. That was necessary in order for Paul to keep pushing on
