Oliviyah Moore10/3/2018Heart and Blood CirculationAs the heart beats, it pumps blood through a system of blood vessels, called thecirculatory system. The vessels are elastic muscular tubes that carry blood to every part of thebody, blood is essential to the body. Vessels also carry out the body’s waste products includingcarbon dioxide. There are three main types of blood vessels: Arteries, Capillaries, and Veins. The heart is a big muscle with four valves connected to make a two-stage pump. Theheart is around the size of a fist. It beats 100,000 times a day and pumps around 2,000 gallons ofblood through about 100,000 miles of organic tubing. The heart gets its energy by oxidizingblood sugars.Arteries carry oxygen, blood away from the heart to all the body’s tissues. They branchseveral times, becoming smaller and smaller as they carry blood farther from the heart intoorgans. Each artery is a muscular tube lined by smooth tissue and has three layers, the intima, themedia, and the adventitia. The largest artery is the aorta, the main high-pressure pipeline connectedto the heart's left ventricle.Capillaries are the smallest and the most common blood vessels in the human body. Theyare vital in the process of exchange of nutrients, wastes, and gases between the blood and thebody’s tissues. They serve to distribute oxygenated blood from arteries to the tissues of the bodyand to feed deoxygenated blood from the tissues back into the veins. The capillaries are the maincomponent in the circulatory system. When pink areas of skin is compressed it results inblanching because blood is pressed out of the capillaries.
