2DEPRESSIONTreatment of Depression in the ElderlyINTROThe purpose of this paper is to formulate a PICOT question, identify resources that will be used, including terms, criteria and Boolean search strings, summarize five articles that are selected, and to create an evidence table based on the article summaries. 3DEPRESSIONThe levels of evidence pyramid provide a way to visualize both the quality of evidence and the amount of evidence available. As you go down the pyramid, the amount of evidence will increase, and the quality of the evidence decreases. The three hierarchies are systematic review, critically appraised topics, and critically appraised individual articles (Walden University Library, 2012). Systematic reviews can be found in several databases. I chose the Cochrane database of systematic review. I chose this database because it is considered to be the “gold standard” for systematic reviews (Walden University Library, 2012). I entered the phrase “depression in the elderly and exercise” and was unable to find any information. I broadened my search and entered, “depression in the elderly”, I was given two different articles. 1. In the first article the aims were to examine the efficacy of antidepressant classes, to compare the withdrawal rates associated with each class and describe the side effect profile of antidepressant drugs for treating depression in patients described as elderly, geriatric, senile or older adults, aged 55 or over (Mottram, P.G., Wilson, K., Strobl, J., 2009).
