FINAL PROJECT 12Switzerland is a beautiful country located in Europe, possessing a high quality healthcare system controlled by the Swiss Government in which every resident possesses health insurance. Despite this, a number of health disparities still cause the country distress. By analyzing the general state of Swiss healthcare, health related issues and the contributing social, economic, andcultural factors, and current actions that are being taken to improve health in Switzerland, recommendations can be made to positively change healthcare access, equity, and outcomes within the country.Introduction and General State of HealthcareIt has often been said that the United States can learn a lot about healthcare from Switzerland, as it possesses one of the best healthcare systems in the world. According to a Healthcare Access and Quality Index study, Switzerland has the third best healthcare system in the world, while the U.S. is ranked 37 of 195 (World Health Organization [WHO], 2018). Switzerland is a neutral country that utilizes a direct democracy and emphasizes quality of care. Both mandatory and voluntary health insurance are available, ensuring that all Swiss residents have equal and affordable access to first-rate medical care. With a population of just over 8 million, the number of people residing in the entire country is close to that of New York City (WTG, n.d.). Switzerland is home to the highest mountains in Europe, the Swiss Alps, and is covered in waterfalls, rivers, and lakes set amid beautiful green pastures, with a generally moderate climate, although the Alps often cause climatic variations throughout the country (WTG, n.d.). Switzerland is, and has been for centuries, a neutral state. This means that it cannot take part in any armed conflict unless the country is being attacked, thus Switzerland can only use its’ armed forces for self-defense and internal security (BBC News, 2018). This is a key characteristic of Switzerland, as is the use of direct democracy. Direct democracy allows for Swiss residents to be involved in decision-making processes via popular votes that can be held up to four times per calendar year (Lucchi, 2017). The Swiss Government, known as the Federal
