In The Electric Kool-aid Acid Test , Tom Wolfe recounts his experience with the pranksters in San Francisco as they await the release of their leader or “chief”, Ken Kesey. I found this piece of modernist non-fiction literature as strikingly different from our previous reading because of the rawness Wolfe infuses into the text through his experience and analysis of the hippie counter-culture of the late 1960s. Wolfe is able to portray the drug or psychedelic trip of LSD through Ken Kesey’s wild narratives in which Kesey encourages human exploration and the widening of horizons that acid and other psychedelics offer to society. In particular, I thought that it was particularly intriguing, yet ironic that the Merry Pranksters were part of this counter- culture movement in which they denounced mainstream American and militaristic authority, yet continue to praise Kesey believing in his mystic of all-knowingness, “He was a
