Chapter 12 – Gilgamesh: Introduction to Heroic Myth The Tombs of Heroes Hero – someone who stands out from others, someone distinguished by prominence, braver, or merit. o * Nobel or well born male alive or dead o Protagonist in legends. o Heroes in these stories told have tombs “The Epic of Gilgamesh” Gilgamish – ancient Mesopotamian story o Sumerian king of Urukbest remembered for building the city wall o Beginning like that of Homer’s Odyssey – shows the continuity from east to west in oral tradition o Two thirds divine and one third moral. o Abused power as king – slept with every virgin in the city before wedding night o At the return of his trip, and long quest for immortality, he realizes that immortality would never be his Gilgamesh and Enkidu Enkidu – Aruru created him out of clay in response to the begging of Gilgamesh’s people – rival of gil, someone he could temper with o Hair, wild animal o Gilgamesh had a dream of the coming of his best friend; sent whore to lie with enkidu o After making love to the whore, he lost many of his animal qualities --- unable to run fast etc. . o Enk challenged Gil and at the end became friends Gilgamesh and Humbaba Humbaba – the guardian of the forest o Sun god shamash urged gil and enk to attack Humbaba o Enk and Gill killed humbaba and offered the storm god enlil his head but enlil was furious that they killed the guard of the forest o ***Broken taboo and divine retribution*** Recurring them in Greek Myth Gilgamesh and Ishtar o When they arrived back in Uruk and Ishtar saw how nicely Gilgamesh cleaned up, she said she would do anything for gil if he slept with her Gil replies by telling her that she has treated all her lovers badly in the end o Recurring theme in Greek Myth (legend): male hostility toward the treacherous sexually aggressive female o Ishtar makes her father, Anu, send down the bull of heaven to destroy gil Enk and Gil end up killing the bull of heaven – cut off his genitals, cut our his
