Alcohol = central nervous system depressant a. @ low blood alcohol levels, produces euphoria (.02-.06) b. Neurons within brain increase 2 chemical in response i. Neurotransmitters dopamine (assoc. with pleasurable feelings) ii. Serotonin (generalized sense of well-being) c. With use over time, neurons take action to reduce levels of neurotransmitters i. Dependence on alcohol (other drugs) to make up difference increase 3. Alcohol = poison a. Organ responsible for detoxifying body = liver b. Liver will see to eliminate (metabolize alcohol) c. Alcohol use very high in WI, UW – Madison (2007) i. 61% report “binge”/high-risk drinking ii. 1-2 X in past 2 weeks: 32.9% iii. 3/+ x: 27.7% 4. “Binge” = amount of alcohol needed to reached BAC/BAL of.08 in about 2 hours, 5 drinks for men, 4 drinks for women 5.
