ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP 2Organizational Leadership and Interprofessional Team Development As a nurse leaders we are concerned with providing safe, quality, and patient centered care. Thisarticle we will learn how business practice and regulatory requirements affect patient care and our roles as nurse leaders. We will assess our facility to determine an area of improvement with regards to patient centered care using the Patient and Family Centered Care (PFCC) Tool. Once we establish the area of improvement, we will create a multidisciplinary team to accomplish our goal and establish a plan of action using leadership and change theories. Finally, we evaluate thesuccess of the plan.Business PracticesIn our current healthcare model, business practices, regulatory requirements, and reimbursement have an impact on the delivery of patient-centered care within an organization. Business practices are things such as policies and procedures. Regulatory requirements are established by local, state, and federal agencies in order to ensure patient safety and establish standards of care. In the healthcare setting, these requirements are overseen by agencies such as The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is important to have knowledge about the scope of agencies such as these, what the regulatory requirements are, and how these requirements affect reimbursements. For example, within the Medicare system, is The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The goal of The Affordable Care Act [ACA] is to improve the quality of health care and produce better patient outcomes while decreasing healthcare costs. Within the umbrella of the ACA is value-based purchasing [VBP]. VBP regulates Medicare reimbursement for hospitals and providers. It is vital for organizations to have an understanding of what is required to ensure maximum reimbursement. If an organization fails to meet established benchmarks,
ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP 3reimbursement will be reduced (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, n.d.).These havea huge impact on patient-centered care because the domain criteria reimbursement is broken down as, 1) Safety, 2) Clinical Care, 3) Efficiency and Cost Reduction, and 4) Patient and Caregiver-Centered Experience/Care Coordination (Medicare.gov, n.d.).In this case, it is important to know the expectation for providing patient-centered care. The Affordable care act includes provisions for reimbursements that are based partially on patient perception as reflected in HCAHPS scores. Under the guidelines of the ACA, organizations must demonstrate its importance of patient and family-centered by mission statement, patient rights statement, and inclusion in the facilities policies and procedures, and developing a culture of patient and family-centered care.
