Chinese’s Chapu. Following the wars, the Treaty of Nanking was made which allowed the
British to trade with anyone they wanted.
This was an important part of history as it brought in new trading laws and awareness of
addiction. Having millions of people addicted to opium caused economic and social disruption
throughout the country, which left many spending all of their money on opium and not being
able to work because they were so addicted (558). When looking at the picture included, we see

order to make more money in trades, knowing full well the addictive quality that the drug had.
For people from Japan, the Meji Restoration was an important event that happened for
their country. It was a political revolution that ended in 1868 and returned their country to an
imperial ruler. Before the Meji Restoration, Japan was run by a military government called the
Tokugawa shogunate (630). During this time, Japan changed greatly from politics, economics,
and even socially. The Meji Restoration occurred when the young emperor Meji was announced
