1 Appnel Kyla Appnel Professor Gastil HIST 101 2 November 2018 Essay Exam II Part 1. Opium War. For most of us, many people have not heard of the Opium Wars, a nineteenth century event that caused much of China’s population to become addicted to opium. During the Qing dynasty, China would sell their goods to the East India Company (British merchants) but would not buy anything from Britain in return (558). Because of this, a lot of money was leaving England, but none was coming back due to China not buying anything. To solve this, Britain decided to start smuggling opium from India into China so that they could start making money as well (557). The result caused millions of Chinese to become addicts, as opium is highly addictive besides being a stress reducer and medicine. Later on, China confiscated and destroyed the opium which angered the British who were making a great deal of money from the opium. Both
2 Appnel sides attempted to negotiate but ended up starting a war. Forts were captured, including the Chinese’s Chapu. Following the wars, the Treaty of Nanking was made which allowed the British to trade with anyone they wanted. This was an important part of history as it brought in new trading laws and awareness of addiction. Having millions of people addicted to opium caused economic and social disruption throughout the country, which left many spending all of their money on opium and not being able to work because they were so addicted (558). When looking at the picture included, we see an artist rendition of the event. The British were feeding the Chinese copious amount of opium in order to make more money in trades, knowing full well the addictive quality that the drug had. Meji Restoration. For people from Japan, the Meji Restoration was an important event that happened for their country. It was a political revolution that ended in 1868 and returned their country to an imperial ruler. Before the Meji Restoration, Japan was run by a military government called the Tokugawa shogunate (630). During this time, Japan changed greatly from politics, economics, and even socially. The Meji Restoration occurred when the young emperor Meji was announced as the ruler of Japan. In the picture above, an artist shows that event occurring. Meji becoming
3 Appnel the new ruler of Japan happened at Kyoto in January 1868 . This is an important event in history because it transitioned Japanese leadership from a military government to an imperial one. Those who made the restoration happen were young samurais, fueled by domestic problems (629). They were also concerned that they would be unable to fight against Western armies, since they had been isolated for about two hundred years. They took on the phrase “enrich the country, strengthen the army” when they started the movement.
