Chapter 3 Basic building structure: neurons Neurons: know structure of neuron depend on sugar. Cell body: (soma) Hold all proteins Dendrites: Receives messages from other cell In MS, axon deteriorates, need myelin sheath Myelin sheath: covers the axon of some neurons and helps speed neural impulses Terminal buttons: Synaspes: gap between terminal button and synaptic terminmals (alot of medications affect what goes on in the synapse.) Lock and key: specific neurons make it fire off to next Statutory: fires off Hibitory : rejects Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) Blocking the little “key” SSRI Mainly for depression or anxiety High dosage for OCD Better Treating OCD: exposure therapy Inhibitory neurotransmitter: serotonin Helps, sleep, eating, pain, mood, body temperature
