LBJ- President of the U.S. after the assassination of JFK.Vietcong- A communist opposition group with the help of N Vietnam that ran a series of attacks on the Diem government and assassinated many South Vietnamese Officials.Vietminh- An organization whose goal was to win independence from foreign rule. They battled France for Vietnamese rights.Ho Chi Minh- The leader of the Indochinese communist party which was founded in 1930. He led many revolts but was later condemned to death by the French and fled Vietnam.Domino theory- Eisenhower's theory on how the countries on the brink of communism are just waiting to topple over on each other and spread. if one nation comes under Communist control, then neighboring nations will also come under Communist control.Ngo Dinh Diem- South Vietnam's president who was a strong anti-communist and also refused to take part in the countrywide election of 1956. Ho Chi Minh Trail- a network of paths along the borders of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, etc. that allowed Ho Chi Minh to supply arms to the Vietcong.Operation Rolling Thunder- A bombing campaign began in 1965 and authorized by President Johnson. This tactical movement relentlessly bombed Vietcong-occupied land, decimating the landscape of hundreds of miles of land.Napalm- a gasoline-based fire bomb that set fire and destroyed Vietnamese jungles.Agent Orange- a leaf killing toxic chemical that was used to destroy Vietnamese people and buildings.Dean Rusk- He had a differing opinion about Vietnam by believing that the defeat of communism was avital importance to the future of America.Landmines- An explosive mine laid on or just under the surface of the ground. They are put in the openfield and when stepped on they explode. Robert McNamara- U.S secretary of defense for President Johnson.William Westmoreland- American commander in South Vietnam and also filed a $120 million dollar lawsuit against CBS for false information about the war.Tet Offensive- a massive surprise attack by the Vietcong on South Vietnamese towns and cities and even the US embassy for a little while in early 1968.Search and destroy missionsSilent majority- Group of quiet honest hard-working middle class Americans who do their job, respect their country and support gov.; Nixon wants their votes in 1968 and 1972, label nixon gave to middle-class americans who supported him, obeyed the laws, and wanted "peace with honor" in vietnamVietnamization- President Richard Nixon's strategy for ending U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, involving a gradual withdrawal of American troops and replacement of them with South Vietnamese forces.
