Unformatted text preview: 3 March 2008 03/03/2008 15:20:00 ← ← 3 March 2008 ← Reading : Chap 2 (pp. 52-57) ← Phonological Development & Disorders ← ← ← Speech Perception (stuff from last lecture) • Bottom-up Theories • Words are recognized when the acoustic cues for their component phonemes are decoded and put together o /b ae dg er z/ • Some problems: Very slow; acoustic cues for different speech sounds are NOT the same, vary with 1) surrounding sounds, 2) speaker identity, 3) speaking rate • Usually every campus is very active in speech perception, understanding what people do to understand speech. Bottom-Up Theory- theory of perception that the data is coming into the senses is the primary data of perception. In bottom-up theory of speech perception- people perceive speech by focusing on information coming into their ears. The ear and brain somehow analyze the different features of baedgerz in order to put them together and determine what word it is. The problems with this approach is that they process is very slow. Analyzing each sound and then putting the sounds together is kind of a slow process, and a lot of people believe that there has to be something that speeds up the process and goes against a bottom-up theory. The speech acoustics vary from person to person and that can create a messy process.
