Calibration of a Thermometer Physics 204 November 5, 2018 Ali Cataggio Lab Partners: Courtney O’Connor Melisa Leimbach Alexa Dill Hypothesis: We will calibrate a laboratory thermometer. Most lab thermometers are filled with Mercury or Alcohol inside a glass bulb attached to a long stem. When heated the liquid expands up the stem until it reaches thermal equilibrium. Then cooling it down causes the liquid to retract until it reaches equilibrium at the freezing point. Equipment: Thermometer Beaker Ice Stirrer Rubber Stopper Ring Stand and Clamp Hot Plate Florence Flask Boiling Chips Procedure: Ice Point of Water 1. Fill a 600 mL beaker three-quarters full of crushed ice 2. Add pre-cooled distilled water to cover the ice, but not enough that the ice floats 3. Stir the ice-water mixture 4. Insert the thermometer into a rubber stop with a slit hole 5. Use a ring stand and clamp to suspend the thermometer in the ice- water 6.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
