Esther Sivalingam PASS / FAIL 216 457 269 Mitchel Gauvin October 26 th 2018 Letter of Dedication 1. What biblical passages does Luther quote that promote violent retaliation against wrongdoing? What passages does he quote that promote always refraining from retaliation? See sections I and II. In Luther’s “Letter of Dedication”, there were many biblical passages that he quoted, that promotes violent retaliation against wrongdoing. Amongst these quotes were; “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord” (Romans 12:19), which means, any type of wrong doing or injury will be revenged. “Whoso sheds man’s blood, his blood shall be shed again by man” (Gen, 9:6), which translates into, heinous crimes committed such as murder or killings, the offender must be punished by being killed. “A life for a life, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a foot for a food, a hand for a hand, a wound for a wound, a bruise for a bruise” (Ex. 21:23). This simply translates to, you pay for what you have taken, or you get back what has been stolen. If you kill someone, you must die. If you make someone lose sight in one eye, you must lose sight in one eye. Whatever harm you do to another, the punishment is that it must be done to you. But I say unto you, That a man shall not resist evil, but if any one strikes thee upon the right cheek, turn to him the other also; whoever will go to the law with thee to take thy coat, let him have the cloak also, and whoever forces thee a mile with him go two miles” (Matt.
