Nathan Lim 3/19/2018 PHI 105-007 Ethics Paper According to an article published by the BMJ (British Medical Journal), The US Attorney General has authorized the Drug Enforcement Administration to “take action against any doctor who prescribes lethal drugs for terminally ill patients.” Doctor assisted suicide is considered legal in six different states: Oregon, Washington, Vermont, California, Montana, Colorado and Washington DC. This would open up the debate as to whether fulfilling the request to end the suffering of the ailing patient would weigh heavier than the laws set by the government. This would up being considered a moral issue that involves serious and avoidable harm because the doctor/physician can refuse/agree to give the patient a lethal dose of medication. Doing so can also affect the family of said patient negatively/positively depending on how it is looked at. My preferred side would be to overrule the authorization of the DEA being allowed to take action against these doctors because the DEA doesn’t generally have any jurisdiction over the well-being and health of ailing patients, so they shouldn't have a say in this situation.
