LPA #5 Explain how, according to the text, one of the major factors mentioned in the text shapes an individual's political opinion. Note: Your response should be a minimum of 50 words One of the major factors that shape an individual’s political opinion is their political knowledge. This refers to the kind of information that they have been able to acquire from time to time and the manner in which the same determines what they think about politics. On page 153 of the text, authors note that knowledgeable citizens tend to understand issues surrounding politics than any other and as a result, they tend to participate even more on issues surrounding their leadership. In addition, the question is based on how much knowledge one must have in order to form a political opinion and the manner in which the same translates into public participation. Political knowledge shapes an individual’s political opinion in the sense that it helps them decide which political ideologies to subscribe to and when to make sure that they participate in political processes. One of the concerns in the text that relate to the new media is the fact that it has shaped the manner in which Americans receive information and how they act based on the news. On page 179 of the text, authors argue that the internet has greatly transformed how Americans get information in the 20 th century and thus playing a critical role when it comes to ensuring that political opinions are shaped. The impact of electronic media in the 20 th century matches that of the 19 th century and the print media. New media has turned out to be biased instead of being objective at one point and this has greatly affected the manner in which Americans make their decisions. This is a major concern because it has continued to affect the outcome of political processes in the country and how citizens continue to participate in important public issues that affect their lives.
