The Institute of Medicine has stated a goal that 90% of practice be evidence-based by 2020. According to HealthyPeople.gov, the United States is currently at approximately 15%. Discuss two barriers that might hold nursing practice from achieving this goal, and suggest ways in which identified barriers may be addressed. Evidence-based practice is one of the most vital tools nurses and other health care professionals can use to give their patients the best care possible. According to Jyothi (2012), evidence-based practice is “the integration of the best research evidence with our clinical expertise and our patient’s unique values and circumstances.” There are multiple barriers that have prevented nurses from achieving the goal that 90% of practice be evidence-based by 2020.
