Polisci 121 September 6, 2018 When you assert that the interests of your nation state are paramount you assert that citizens of another nation state have no moral importance. o This logic allows your nation to kill citizens of other nations o It follows the idea that some people are more important than others and we can kill people if it is a legitimate case of self-defense. o Are there just acts of killing? Murder and Killing are the same act but the connotation of the two are very different, and political relativism, combined with the idea that your nation state is paramount, uses the differences a lot. Political Realism is an approach to the study of international politics and it emphasized the role of the nation state. In the process of expanding, empires often lost the identities that were so paramount to their previous motivations. This is why empires fall: the citizens are no longer loyal to the cause that absorbed them. The city-state cannot become powerful unless they require resources. The empire has a lot of resources but lacks loyalty. The city state has a lot of loyalty but lacks resources. The nation state is a combination taken from the European model that attempts to harmonize the two into a successful government. The 30 years’ war ended in 1638 with The Peace of Westphalia The violence between Catholics and Protestants in the 30 years’ war was over the infallibility of the pope that protestants denied. They compromised because both sides wanted to come to the aid of their people being persecuted, but it meant the interventions were endless. The Peace of Westphalia decided that intervening to help your fellow people being persecuted is no longer allowed, and the end result was sovereignty. o If you live in a catholic area, you have to submit to catholic rule and religion. o If you live in a protestant area, you have to submit to protestant rule and religion. The above is the principle of nonintervention, and it decided the fate of future political agreements. After the war was solved, the pope had no power in protestant areas. People who belong to a nation believe they have a common identity. The problem with this is that when everyone is the same, the people who aren’t the same are automatically persecuted. The state is not an emotional idea. It is not a sense of belonging. The state is a legal apparatus that forces you to obey the law. The state = The government The hope is that with a politically virtuous government, the laws and state will reflect the will of the people. Without the loyalty of the nation, the state will fail. The state exists to protect the nation: it taxes to afford security and resources. In some respect, bad systems are better than no systems. In democracy, the entire nation either has to work hard to make it work well, or the entire nation will change its legal system by most likely going to war.
