From what I remember the bomb was designed to stop World War II and get Japan to surrender. World War II was led by President Harry Truman and started because of the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii a few years previously. There were two major bombings a few days apart from each other. The bombs were the first to be made by the US government that was nuclear and could lead to causalities.
