IMMAN’\NTbehindthewordrespectinanobscurefeeling,insteadofgivingadistinctsolutionofthequestionbyaconceptofthereason.Butalthoughrespectisafeeling,itisnotafeelingreceivedthroughinfluence,butisoelf-wroughrbyrationalconcept,and,therefore,isspecificallydistinctfromallfeelingsoftheformerkind,whichmaybereferredeithertoinclinationorfear.WhatIrecognizeimmediatelyasalawforme,Irecognizewithrespect.Thismerelysignifiestheconsciousnessthatmywillissubordinatetoalass,stithouttheinterventionofotherinfluencesonmcsense.Theimmediatedeterminationofthewillbythelaw,andtheconsciousnessofthis,iscalledrespect,sothatthisisregardedasaneffectofthelassonthesubject,andnorasthecauseofit.Respectisproperlytheconceptionofaworthwhichthwartsmyself-love.Accordinglyitissomethingsvhichisconsideredneitherasanobjectofinclinationnoroffear,althoughithassomethinganalogoustoboth.Theobjectofrespectisthelawonly,andthat,thelawwhichweimposeonoursch’es,andyetrecognizeasnecessaryinitself.Asalaw,wearesubjectedtoitsvithoutconsultingself-love;asimposedbyusonourselves,itisaresultofourwill.Intheformeraspectithasananalogytofear,inthelattertoinclination.Respectforapersonisproperlyonlyrespectforthelaw(ofhonesty,etc.)ofwhichhegivesusanexample.Sincewealsolookontheimprovementofourtalentsasaduty,weconsiderthatweseeinapersonoftalents,asitwere,theexampleofalaw(viz.tobecomelikehiminthisbyexercise),andthisconstitutesourrespect.Allso-calledmoralincernzconsistssimplyinrespectforthelaw.4Thedependenceofthedesiresonsensationsiscalledinclination,andthisaccordinglyalsvavsindicatesawant.Thedependenceofacontingentlydcterminablcwillonprinciplesofreasoniscalledaninreresr.This,therefore,isfoundonlyinthecaseofadependentwillwhichdoesnotalwaysofitselfconformtoreason;intheDivinewillwecannotconceiveanyinterest.Butthehumanwillcanalsorakeansntrresrinathingssithoutthereforeacringfrominterest.Theformersignifiesthepracticalinterestintheaction,thelattertheparhologtcalmtheobjectoftheaction.Theformerindicatesonlydependenceofthewillonprinciplesofreasoninthemselves;thesecond,dependenceonprinciplesofreasonforthesakeofinclination,reasonsupplyingonlythepracticalruleshowtherequirementoftheinclinationmaybesatisfied.Inthefirstcasetheactioninterestsme;inthesecondtheob184jectoftheaction(becauseitispleasanttome).Wehaveseeninthefiritsectionthatinanactiondonefromdutywemustlooknottotheinterestintheobject,butonlytothatintheactionitself,andinitsrationalprinciple(viz,thelaw).
