EMARI RILEY HOWE MASS AND HEAT LAB REPORT PurposeThe purpose of this lab is to investigate the relationship between the mass of a substance andthe amount of heat required to raise the temperature 20°C. By looking at the connection betweenmass and heat energy, it will help demonstrate why it takes longer to increase the temperature ofa substance when more of that substance is present.Background researchHeat is an example of thermal and kinetic energy. When there is a difference in temperatureheat flows from a warmer object to a cooler one . For example heat flows from a stove ( warmerobject ) to a pot ( cooler object ). Heat can be transferred three different ways. The first way isheat conduction which transfers heat by direct touch. An example of this is a child touching a hotradiator. The second way is convection , which recycles cool air/water with warm air/water. Anexample of this is when a pot of water on a stove has “ bubbles that form on the bottom and riseto the top. Hot water near the bottom of the pan circulates up, forcing cooler water near thesurface to sink “ (183). The last way is by Radiation , which uses electromagnetic waves andlight to transfer heat. An example of this is when rays from the sun heats up the sand on a beach.Temperature measures the kinetic energy the particles / atoms have in a substance. For eachphase , the kinetic energy changes , so we (humans) use thermometers to measure how muchenergy each phase has .
