Hannah Miller 4/5/18 U.S. History 6th Period The Vietnam War The Vietnam War, which began in 1954, was a very long and very costly conflict that put the communist part of North Vietnam against South Vietnam and the United States. The Cold War between the United States and the Soviet union made this conflict worse, resulting in more than 3 million deaths. This included 58,000 Americans. Resistance to the war bitterly divided Americans, even after the withdrawal of the U.S. forces. Communist forces ended the war by taking control over South Vietnam in 1975. The country was then considered the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. What lead to the Vietnam War was Japanese soldiers invading Vietnam during World War II. Vietnam’s political leader, Ho Chi Minh, formed the Viet Minh or the League of Independence for Vietnam in order to fight off both the Japanese and the French.
