1REL 2104 November 2018Summary of Module 3 ReadingsIn this week’s readings we read about St. Augustine of Hippo. He was born in 354 in northern Africa. He believed that humans are broken on many levels and this brokenness stems from the Original sin. His beliefs are such that humans know how to good or do the right thing but, because our “brains are broken,” (Humphries, 20) we don’t always choose the correct path. He also believes that “we exist on three different levels: knowledge, love, and action,” (Humphries 20). Because of this he argued that we need varying degrees of grace and by having God’s grace, it will help us get into heaven because we aren’t good enough to get into heaven on our own.According to Thomas L. Humphries, Jr., “Grace is needed not only at the very beginning, but throughout Christian life even to the final moment of this life,” (Augustine 23). As babies we are not innocent when we are born. We need to be baptized to receive the grace of God before we can go to heaven.
