Tuesday Lecture 5/22 -UPDATED readings, read articles for week 8 and 9, (silver or lead) and (mexican myth warriors). -Read week 9 textbook -Read week 10 Los Zetas -Marijuana still illegal at federal level -Professor used to do undercover operations, where he would buy weed off of cartels, pounds of it. He learns that besides the cops that were surveillancing the deal, the cartel would also have guys spying on you. They also had lawyers, while he was undercover and the cops came through, one of the cartel guys told him, don’t worry we have lawyers -Florida has biggest indoor grows. -Indoor grows, you can have 3x the grow of marijuana than you could growing it normally, make you alot more money. -Cannabis is a international drug business. -Marijuana is a weed plant -It can grow as high as a tree -There is a “prince of pot” in Canada -Canada is FIRST country to make medical marijuana legal -Indoor grow = also known as grow-ops -CBD may have very good medical benefit, used to treat things -Average “first time use” for kids in America of weed is 10 years old -THC is fat soluble substance, it collects in your brain, it can be considered a neural toxin, hinder brain development. -6 countries have made cannabis legal. -Decriminalizing drugs has seen a consistent trend of crime rates going down, jail populations going down -Cannabis is a SCHEDULE 1 DRUG (last times notes about schedules) -HIGHLY ADDICTIVE AND WILL KILL YOU !!!! (they claim) -NO medical value at all -Northern Triangle Countries (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras) are transhipment countries, product NOT made there, but goes through those countries to cross to Mexico to come to America. -America is consumption nation, we consume half of the world’s drugs -Street, prison, outlaw motorcycle gangs (OMGs) all help distribute drugs -“Robin Hood effect” when they take over a town, they bring them doctors, cell phones, grocery stores. In return, they stay loyal to the cartels. When the military or police come in they protect the cartels and don’t tell the government information. -They even help fund the Catholic Church in South America, help them build churches n stuff -Canadian marijuana is also transported south to the US, but the majority of the drugs come from our southern border.
-Less than 10% of gangs, less than 10% of MS13 and less than 10% of Barrio 18 are actually violent, the majority of the gang members don’t do anything, only 10% are going out and killing people, etc. -In Immigrant families, it is the first generation of children that get involved in gangs, not the adult immigrants themselves. The kids use the transnational nature of their family, they have families/friends back home, so gives them connections back at home. So if these gang members have to leave the US because of their crimes, they bring their gang culture back to their home country, like el salvador.
