THIS I BELIEVE 2 This I Believe “16 and Pregnant” was the new show airing on MTV. Marci Bookout, a teen mom in her junior year of high school, explained during an interview her challenges of remaining active as cheerleading captain while juggling her duties as a new parent. You see, Marci’s views as a teen mom were like my mother’s experience when she was 16 and I wasa two-month-old. I believe that where you come from does not define who you are or your destiny. Growing up in Hollywood, a small town in Charleston County, South Carolina; where 18.7% of families and 22.4% of the population are below the poverty line, teen pregnancy was very common. Throughout generations of my family, every woman had bore a child while in high school and it was known as the family curse. I was 16 when “16 and Pregnant” aired, providing the prefect ice-breaker for my mother and I to discuss her expectations of me.
