Lipids, Lecture 3 Mucosa Chylomicrons Carry lipids from gut to liver; deliver TG to cells. (Lymphatic system joins bloodstream) Dietary lipids end up here -Triglyceride (TG) -Cholesterol (chol) -Phospholipids Liver Lipoproteins A “bubble” lipids can go in to. (made of protein and phospholipids) -Very Low Density Lipoproteins (VLDL) Deliver triglycerides to cells Dietary lipids Endogenous – synthesized -Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Atherogenic (development of heart disease); “bad” cholesterol Delivers cholesterol to cells Delivers cholesterol to arteries -High Density Lipoproteins (HDL) Returns cholesterol to liver for secretion; “good” cholesterol Scavenges cholesterol from cells Scavenges cholesterol from arteries *Fat = lower density; Protein = higher density Dietary lipid Chylomicron Liver/ TG to cells VLDL TG to cells Liver LDL Cholesterol to cells HDL Returns chol to liver Bile Gut Liver Excreted
