Jackie Diaz 09/22/07 SOC 110 Week 4 Essay: First Group of Readings Transsexual is a term that refers to individuals whose gender identity does not correspond to their biological sex. Due to our dual-gendered society where differences in genitalia unquestionably determine gender identity, these individuals are automatically thrust into a stigmatized group where their gender identities are looked at with contempt. They are given demeaning names such as “tranny” and “cross-dresser” and are often assumed to be homosexual merely because they do not conform to society’s two established sexes. However, this brings up a critical question; are there really only two sexes? In “How to Become a Berdache: Toward a Unified Analysis of Gender Diversity,” Will Roscoe answers this question by presenting various groups of people who accepted the idea of a multiple-gender paradigm. This paradigm introduces a third gender, comprised of females who undertake male lifestyles, and a fourth gender,
