Jackie Diaz 10/5/07 SOC 110 Week 6 Essay : First Group of Readings Beauty is an evolving social construction that varies across cultures and changes over time. It is an aspect that is deeply rooted in history and that has been desperately pursued for centuries. Although ideals of beauty are constantly fluctuating, two universal features remain intact: first, the fact that the ideals are almost impossible to achieve and second, the expectation that women will conform to them. In “Beauty is the Beast: Psychological Effects of the Pursuit of the Perfect Female Body,” Elayne A. Saltzberg and Joan C. Chrisler corroborate this idea by tracing the dynamics of beauty ideals throughout history and by highlighting how women have manipulated their bodies in order to conform to them. Some of the most notable examples she cites are Chinese feet binding, corsets, and modern-day plastic surgery. Saltzberg and Chrisler use these examples to describe the torture that women have inflicted on themselves in order to attain unfeasible standards of beauty.
