Unit 4: Case 4 – The Service Family The Service family adopted Hong from an Asian orphanage when she was about 15 months old. Hong had been in a home care program for the first 8 months of her life and then was placed in the orphanage when the home caregiver could not continue. When the family first saw Hong, she toddled quickly over to them wearing a big smile, and as Mr. Service held out his arms, Hong ran right into them. Even though she spoke no English at that time, she seemed to communicate her wishes easily with gestures and before long she was repeating English words. Hong’s transition into the extended family was relatively easy; she “took” to both sets of grandparents and interacted well with her little cousins. The Services enrolled her in a 2- day-a-week preschool at age 2½, and her transition there was also smooth. She showed an outgoing, friendly manner, and by the time she started kindergarten she was an accomplished English speaker with good emerging
