Human Osteology Fall 2002 PROJECT # 1: Craniometrics / Sex and Ancestry Estimation Goal : The goal of this project is to give you some hands on experience evaluating morphological variation and measuring crania for the purposes of estimating sex and ancestry. Morphology can be assessed visually and quantified through craniometrics. Both of these approaches can be extremely valuable in forensic anthropology, paleoanthropology, skeletal biology, and human variation. This project will give you experience doing some of the standard assessments and measurements. Instructions : There are 5 crania available for this project. You will need to visually assess and collect measurements for use with FORDISC 2.0 from two (2) of the crania (any 2 different crania will do). Assessments of visual indicators are to be written in the areas provided – you will find helpful information for evaluating these features in the White and Bass texts. Measure and record the 24 cranial measurements described in Data Collection Procedures for Forensic Skeletal Material
