Security Council #4 Catherine Doan Syrian Civil War Kazakhstan Syrian Position PaperPart l- Background Syria is a limited, cramped, and poverty-stricken country. Along with its devastating past of droughts and dust storms, it has faced many complications from the corrupt government from the Syrian Civil War. The late Hafez al-Assad ruled Syria from 1970-2000 before passing away. His son, Bashar al-Assad took over the role as President on July 2000. The leader came into power with a fame for modernization and was considered a demagogue. The Civil War that started on Tuesday March 15th, 2011 to current date. The war resulted about 5 million Syrians fleeing the country, 6.3 million Syrians displaced, and 4000,000 deceased. In October 2, 2011, a new alignment of Syrian opposition groups established the Syrian National Council. The Councilis a framework which was intended to end al-Assad's government and establish a democratic system. As the war continued on to February 2, 2012, a UN Security Council meeting ended withno agreement on a draft resolution that was designed to pressure Syria to end its months-long crackdown on anti-government demonstrators.
