Deviance Goes against the norms or values of the society you live in or subculture  of the society Can be negative or positive according to the group you live in. Deviance is defined as behavior, beliefs, or conditions that are viewed by  powerful segments of society as serious violations of important norms  Four Characteristics of Deviance: 1. Relative : varies from one culture to another. How we react. 2. Audience is very important:  front stage and back stage; are you  conforming?: place your doing the behavior 3. Deviance is historical or time limited : against the law for a woman to  show her ankles. 4. Depends on the actor : same behavior can be deviant depending on  who’s doing the behavior. With deviance: Age is important Gender is important  1

Affirms:      the values we have; develop social conscience 2. Boundaries:      whose conforming, who is not. Marginal people are seen  as bad 3. Social unity:      having “them” and “us” I belong you don’t 4. Social change:      get change when you have people in the “system” that  are deviant   Deviance is a cultural universal which means that deviance can be found in  every society.  2
