PATRICE LUMUMBA 2 Patrice Lumumba Introduction Patrice Lumumba was a Congolese Prime Minister. He played an important role in the transformation of DRC from being a colony of Belgium into an independent republic. Lumumba was known to be an African nationalist. He was a key factor in the Mouvement National Congolais (MNC). Lumumba aimed to bring peace and development in DRC. Lumumba’s vision involved both the whites and the Africans living in the same society. It is important to note that towards independence he was vocal about the previous colonial masters and he was even determined to embrace their ideologies of modernization. Lumumba tried to stop the Belgium- supported Katangan secessionists because he believed that this partnership would lead to a poor African State. He tried to work with the USA and the UN to assist him to prevent the Katanga succession into power but both the parties declined to assist. It is because of the refusal of both the US and the UN assistance to Lumumba that led him to turn to the Soviet Union for assistance. This move by Lumumba played a key part in his assassination. This paper will examine and discuss the actions that made Lumumba a target of assassination and what he accomplished in life and also the roles played by the Belgium and the US government in the assassination of Lumumba. Discussion Achievement of Patrice Lumumba Before the assassination of Lumumba, the Prime Minister raised pay for all the government employees, except for the military personnel, which later caused discontent among their ranks. This was one of the achievements of Lumumba after he was made the Prime Minister shortly
PATRICE LUMUMBA 3 after Congo gained independence. Lumumba was a strong character who was determined to drive Congo into a more developed society which most of its people were able to live a better life. Lumumba put the people he was representing before himself (Bouwer, 2010). This inspired many people in the Congolese society and even in other parts of Africa continent. It is also because of this that most of his enemy found a reason to fear him and plot his assassination with the aid of the CIA and the Belgium government. During his time as the Prime Minister, he was able to shape the Congolese Army Force. He gave the Congolese Armed forces a new face within a few months after becoming the Prime Minister. He was able to Africanized the forces by appointing Victor Lundula to be the General and Commander in Chief while at the same time
