TOURISTS ARE CLASSIFIED, ACCORDING TO THEIR NEEDS AND THEIR REASONS FOR TRAVELLING ARE PUT INTO CATEGORIES: Tourist Categories Educational Tourists Business and professional tourists Leisure and holiday tourists Visit Friends and Relatives (VFR) Incentive tourists Health / Medical tourists The tourism industry tries to meet the needs of all types of tourists by providing suitable facilities and services for each category. (Macleod, 2010)

Travel Motivation Business - travel for their work. - MICE tourism; Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions. Culture - Travel to learn about: architecture, food and drink, lifestyle and religion. - visit a place ‘to learn’ more about the culture and history of a destination. (Wanderlust) Desire for adventure - experience something ‘new’ or different to what they can experience in their home environment. - ‘active activities’ such as a safari or extreme sports. Education - learn a new language - study at a ‘famous’ university or in a famous city. Escape - ‘a change of scenery’. ‘A change is as good as a rest.’ Love and Romance - travel to romantic or exotic places - ‘honeymoons’ or even weddings ‘on the beach’ in exotic environments. Physical Reasons - Many people may want to ‘get away’ for some rest and relaxation (R & R) - ‘passive activities’, such as reading and laying on a beach. ( Sunlust) Social Reasons - ‘to meet’ other people, and make new friends - lots of nightlife and social activities or visiting friends and relatives. (VFR)
