Final draft The article, in Glei and Goldmen (2000), studied the relatively low use of modern pregnancy- related care in Guatemala. The main point of the article is among indigenous women, and explores the role of socioeconomic status, social and cultural variables, and access to biomedical health facilities in accounting for ethnic differences in care. Guatemala, one of the poorest countries in Latin America, experienced the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the region. About half of the population is indigenous and the Ladino population is defined as non- indigenous people.   The indigenous population is concentrated in the most disadvantaged segments of society, and upper levels of income and education distribution are dominated by Ladinos. Glei and Goldmen (2000) associate the relatively low use of modern pregnancy-related care with socioeconomic status, social and cultural variables, and access to biomedical health facilities that account for ethnic differences in care. However, they vaguely presented the ethnicity between the indigenous people and the Ladinos and lacked a clear explanation for their role. Glei and Goldmen (2000) compare midwives and doctors in most respect and present their findings with tables and data. but, their argument lacks credibility. They need a convincing explanation for the midwife, doctor and nurse role of care received during pregnancy and birth to provide a reliable basis in their research. Moreover, it is unreliable to sample their clothes and language to represent the ethnic differences between Ladino and indigenous people. More
